Jamie Varley Guilty Murder Adopted Baby Preston Davey

A Blackpool teacher has been found guilty of murdering the 13-month-old son he adopted, marking one of the most devastating child-protection failures to reach a UK courtroom this year.

Jamie Varley, 37, was convicted today of the murder of Preston Davey, while his partner, John McGowan-Fazakerley, 32, was convicted of allowing the child’s death.

The verdict ends a trial that exposed harrowing details of abuse Preston suffered between March and July 2023, shortly after Varley adopted him at nine months old.

Prosecutors proved Varley subjected the infant to sexual, physical, and emotional abuse, while evidence revealed he had “dark thoughts” about sexually abusing the baby.

Unlike typical cases focused solely on criminal liability, this trial forced courts to confront how adoption screening and ongoing child-welfare monitoring failed a vulnerable infant placed with someone later proven capable of extreme harm.

The case is now expected to trigger urgent reviews of adoption vetting protocols across England.

McGowan-Fazakerley was also found guilty of two counts of child cruelty and one count of sexual assault against Preston, underscoring that both adults played roles in the child’s suffering.

During the trial, Varley denied all charges and claimed Preston “had a brilliant life” with him, a statement the jury rejected outright.

The ruling sends a chilling message to adoption agencies and social services: enhanced oversight must accompany every placement, especially when infants enter homes without extended family buffers.

Child-protection experts warn this case could reshape policy on post-adoption visits and mandatory reporting.

Varley faces a mandatory life sentence, while McGowan-Fazakerley’s sentencing will follow shortly. The community in Blackpool remains shaken, and Preston’s name is now synonymous with a failure the system must urgently correct.
