In a move that redefines global cultural diplomacy, Shakira and Burna Boy will perform “Dai Dai” live for the first time at the 2026 FIFA World Cup opening ceremony in Mexico City on June 11.
FIFA announced the headline pairing on Friday, confirming Burna Boy as the first African artist to headline a World Cup opening ceremony.
The collaboration transcends music. Shakira donated all royalties from “Dai Dai” to the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund, which aims to raise US$100 million for children’s education and football access worldwide.
This shifts the narrative from spectacle to social impact, positioning the tournament as a catalyst for measurable change. Burna Boy’s presence signals Afrobeats’ full institutional integration into global sports infrastructure.
He joins Davido as one of only two Nigerian artists on an official FIFA soundtrack, but his opening-ceremony slot carries unprecedented weight for African representation.
Shakira told The Sun Nigeria in 2024:
“I love Burna so much,” calling Afrobeats “eclectic, honest and real”.
The ceremony begins 90 minutes before kickoff at Estadio Azteca, with Mexico facing South Africa. The lineup includes Alejandro Fernández, Belinda, J Balvin, Lila Downs, Los Ángeles Azules, Maná, Danny Ocean, and Tyla.
Festival audiences are 27.6× more likely to show soccer purchase intent, suggesting massive commercial ripple effects for sponsors and brands tied to the event.
Fans should arrive early as the show starts at 11:30 local time. This performance could become the cultural benchmark for how music, sports, and philanthropy converge on the world’s biggest stage.
Stay tuned for live updates as the tournament approaches.
