Coco Gauff stood one point from the Wimbledon final, netted a drop shot, and smiled. That instinctive reaction on Centre Court on Thursday may explain the 22-year-old better than any trophy, and her words afterwards turned a crushing defeat into a masterclass in sporting grace.
Karolina Muchova beat Gauff 6-2, 1-6, 7-6 (12-10) in two hours and 35 minutes, saving a match point at 9-8 in the deciding tie-break to reach her maiden Wimbledon final.
Gauff, the reigning French Open and US Open champion, had led their head-to-head 6-1. Yet she spoke of her opponent with striking generosity.
“She’s someone that deserves more success with how talented she is,” Gauff said. “She’s not an opponent you want to face at any point in the tournament. I’m honored… not honored. I don’t wanna say honored to lose. But it’s a match I’m gonna remember for my career. And it sucks to be on the losing end. But walking off the court I was like, that was a lot of fun.”
The tribute lands because of who Muchova is. The 29-year-old Czech, whose career has been repeatedly interrupted by injury, clutched at her left side late in the match but insisted afterwards she was fine, and improved to a remarkable 29-0 this year when winning the first set.
For Gauff, the numbers show how close she came. She had won 18 Grand Slam matches after dropping the first set, and produced a dominant second set before the tie-break turned on the finest margins, including a diving Muchova volley winner.
Wimbledon remains the missing piece in Gauff’s collection. But at 22, with two majors banked and a reputation for grace that sponsors and fans notice, defeats like this build legacies too. Muchova now faces Linda Noskova in an all-Czech final on Saturday. iShareNews will bring full coverage.
