Andy Burnham Snap Election Possible as UK Next PM After Starmer Resigns

Andy Burnham is locking in as Britain’s next prime minister, but the “King of the North” has left one critical question deliberately unanswered: could he trigger a snap general election despite earlier signals he wouldn’t?

The 56-year-old former Greater Manchester mayor descended from the North to Westminster today following Keir Starmer’s June 22 resignation announcement, positioning himself for what critics call a coronation rather than a contested leadership battle.

Andy Burnham Snap Election Possible as UK Next PM After Starmer Resigns

The political landscape shifted dramatically when Wes Streeting, the former health secretary, dropped from the Labour leadership race and publicly backed Burnham.

This endorsement eliminates the only serious challenger and makes Burnham the overwhelming favourite to succeed Starmer by July.

Streeting’s decision removes the 81-supporter threshold needed to trigger a formal contest, leaving Labour’s National Executive Committee to set the leadership timetable.

Burnham’s path to Westminster came through a commanding Makerfield by-election victory on June 18, where he defeated Reform UK’s candidate by more than 9,000 votes.

Supporters call him the King of the North for his regional champion brand built across three consecutive mayoral elections. He needs this parliamentary seat to challenge for Labour leadership, a requirement he now satisfies.

The snap election question carries weight because Burnham previously said he would not call an early vote if he replaces Starmer.

Yet Bloomberg reported Burnham refused to definitively rule out a contest when asked whether he was preparing for a fight or a coronation as he left Manchester Piccadilly station. This ambiguity suggests he may still consider an election if Labour’s authority erodes further.

Burnham will now face the challenge of revitalising Labour after prolonged poor polling while avoiding the divisive infighting that plagued the party.

His campaign hinges on his Greater Manchester achievements and pledging to make politics work properly for people across the UK.

Labour members and voters now watch whether Burnham chooses unity through a coronation or legitimacy through an election. Stay informed as the leadership timetable unfolds.
