For most of his career, Eloy Room was a footnote—a backup goalkeeper sitting on benches in Dutch stadiums while others played. But at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the 37-year-old transformed from overlooked reserve to national legend, recording 15 saves against Ecuador to earn Curaçao its first-ever World Cup point. This performance marked the most saves in a 90-minute World Cup match since records began in 1966.
The Unlikely Hero: A Career Built on Second Chances
Early Struggles in Dutch Football
Born in Nijmegen, Netherlands on February 6, 1989, Room stood 1.90 meters (6 ft 3 in) tall but struggled to find his place in elite football. At Vitesse, where he joined at age 13, he spent years as a reserve goalkeeper watching others take the field.
His breakthrough came late. Room only became Vitesse’s first-choice goalkeeper in 2014, helping the club win the KNVB Cup in 2016-17—their first championship in 125 years. He remained a squad player at PSV, coming off the bench for their 2017-18 Eredivisie title win.
“I spent more time in the locker room than on the pitch,” Room once reflected.
The Belgium Detour and MLS Gamble
By 2019, Room was 30 years old with limited first-team opportunities. He made a bold decision: leave the Netherlands for Major League Soccer, signing with Columbus Crew.
The gamble worked. In 2020, Room won MLS Cup as Columbus’s starting goalkeeper, defeating Seattle Sounders 3-0. He earned MLS Save of the Year—the first Crew player to win the award—after a double save against Orlando City.
Yet even in America, Room faced uncertainty. He returned to Vitesse in 2023, then moved to Belgian club Cercle Brugge in 2024, before landing at Miami FC in late 2025.
“At 36, I was still fighting for my spot,” he said.
The Father’s Legacy: Why Room Chose Curaçao Over the Netherlands
Room received one U20 cap for the Netherlands in 2010 but never played for their senior team. His path to international football seemed blocked.
The turning point came through Patrick Kluivert, the former Netherlands striker who was coaching Curaçao at the time. Kluivert convinced Room to represent the Caribbean island through his father’s heritage.
“They called me crazy when I switched from the Netherlands to Curaçao,” Room admitted.
Critics questioned the move. Curaçao had never won a World Cup qualification match. The nation—just 156,000 people—was the smallest in World Cup history. Room would likely remain unknown outside Caribbean football circles.
But Room saw something others missed: an opportunity to become a legend for his father’s people.
The Match That Changed Everything: 15 Saves Against Ecuador
Before the Game: Doubt and Disappointment
Curaçao’s World Cup debut ended in humiliation. They lost 7-1 to Germany in their opening match, with Room taking heavy criticism. Social media mocked the goalkeeper. Zorannah, Room’s Serbian-Croatian influencer wife, watched from the stands in Houston and publicly defended her husband.
“Many said Curaçao doesn’t deserve to be here,” Room recalled.
The Ecuador Performance: Pure Genius
In Kansas City, Room delivered what BBC called “one of the greatest individual performances in World Cup history”:
Only Tim Howard (USA) made more saves in a World Cup match: 16 against Belgium in 2014, but that included extra time.
Room stopped close-range efforts from Enner Valencia, long-range bombs from Moisés Cortez, and a John Yeah penalty attempt.
The Aftermath: From Criticized to Celebrated
“The first save set the tone for the team. It instilled confidence in me,” Room said.
Within hours, Room gained over 600,000 new social media followers. He joked, “I think I deserve a statue in Curaçao now”.
King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima of the Netherlands attended the match, recognizing Room’s achievement. Curaçao manager Dick Advocaat praised the collective effort: “Today the team performed as it should”.

The Record-Capped Captain
Room now holds 74 caps for Curaçao, joint-most with captain Leandro Bacuna. He debuted June 6, 2015, in a 1-0 win against Trinidad and Tobago, earning immediate Man of the Match honors.
His clean sheet against Jamaica in November 2025 secured Curaçao’s first-ever World Cup qualification.

Life Beyond Football: Family and the Miami Connection
Room married Zorannah (Zorana Jovanović) in February 2026 in an intimate Miami wedding. They met on a dating app in June 2023, and he proposed in May 2025.
The couple lives in Miami, Florida, with their daughter Lala, born in 2020. Room signed with Miami FC in December 2025, the secondUSL Championship, making 8 appearances in 2026.
“Miami is home now,” Room said.
The Bigger Picture: Why Room’s Story Matters
For Curaçao: A Nation’s Pride
Curaçao represents the smallest nation ever in the World Cup. Room’s performance proved that size doesn’t determine greatness.
“Now, Curaçao may have found new royalty in Room,” The Independent reported.
For Older Players: Proof That Age Isn’t Limiting
At 37, Room is one of the oldest goalkeepers in World Cup history. His journey challenges the myth that football careers end by 35.
“I’m still playing because I believe I can contribute,” Room stated.
For Backup Goalkeepers: The Ultimate Comeback
Room spent 15 years as a reserve in the Netherlands before becoming a World Cup hero. His story proves that persistence matters more than early recognition.
What’s Next for Eloy Room?
Curaçao faces Ivory Coast in their final Group match. A win would eliminate Germany from qualification. Room’s future includes continuing at Miami FC and potentially representing Curaçao at the 2028 Olympics.
“At 37, I’m not done,” Room said.
