Manchester United confirmed on Thursday where their next home will be, and in doing so quietly opened the most emotional question in the club’s modern history: what happens to Old Trafford?
The proposed 100,000-seater stadium will sit roughly 350 metres north-west of the current ground, on a triangle of land in Stretford between John Gilbert Way, Wharfside Way, and Europa Way, currently occupied by a go-kart track and industrial units.
The club has stressed that no final decision has been made on the future of the existing stadium, United’s home since 1910. Fans will keep watching matches there while construction proceeds, but the silence on what follows is deliberate, and it matters.
The numbers frame this as far more than a football project. The ground would be the largest in the UK, overtaking Wembley’s 90,000, with the wider Trafford Wharfside masterplan covering 150 hectares and promising 15,000 new homes, 48,000 local jobs, and a projected £7.3bn annual boost to the UK economy.
“We are committed to building a world-class stadium with our supporters, not simply for them,” said Collette Roche, CEO of the new stadium development, calling the site ideal for preserving the heritage, traditions, and matchday rituals that supporters hold sacred.
There were subtle shifts, too. Thursday’s images showed a conventional bowl rather than the dramatic canopy design unveiled by Foster + Partners last year, though the club insists nothing is final.
The clock has a target. Roche wants Premier League football in the new ground before 2035, with the stadium operational in time for a potential Women’s World Cup bid that year. Nothing can move for at least a year while consultations and planning approvals run.

For now, supporters gain a map reference and lose certainty. The Theatre of Dreams has a neighbour coming, and eventually, a decision. iShareNews will follow the consultation and planning process.
