While Gareth Southgate’s successor Thomas Tuchel finalises England’s World Cup preparations in North America, Phil Foden is channelling his summer differently, and perhaps more meaningfully.
The Manchester City playmaker, one of the most notable omissions from Tuchel’s 26-man World Cup roster announced in May, was spotted spending quality time in Cheshire with his long-term partner and reported fiancée Rebecca Cooke, treating her to a jewellery shopping outing that signals life is moving forward on his own terms.
The couple, who have been together since their teenage years in Stockport, were previously seen visiting a local jeweller in Wilmslow after arriving in a £400,000 Mercedes G-Wagon, suggesting this latest outing follows a pattern of quiet, grounded moments that contrast sharply with the noise surrounding his international career.
Tuchel’s decision to omit Foden was linked to a dip in his goals and overall influence compared to previous seasons, as well as tactical uncertainty over whether he best operates as a No.10, false nine, or deeper midfielder. For a player who started every game on England’s run to the Euro 2024 final, the exclusion represents a stark shift in fortune.
Yet the PFA has not stayed silent. The organisation’s chief described Foden as “one of the victims of this crazy calendar,” adding: “It’s a very sad state of affairs if someone like Phil is not on the pitch, because we love people who make us dream.”
The couple share three children and reside in a high-security mansion in Prestbury, Cheshire, estimated to be worth over £3 million. With rumours of a summer 2026 or 2027 wedding circulating, the jewellery trip reads less like retail therapy and more like a man quietly investing in what matters most.
England may be heading to a World Cup without him. But Foden, it seems, is building something just as permanent closer to home. Whether Tuchel’s gamble pays off, and whether Foden forces his way back into contention after the tournament, remains the defining football question of his career.
