It took Mayor Zohran Mamdani one laughing sentence to deflate a week of outrage over Taylor Swift’s wedding bill, but his full answer contained a detail most headlines skipped.
Asked Friday whether the singer would reimburse New York for police overtime around her Madison Square Garden wedding, Mamdani confirmed:
“She has already paid the cost of the permit that was lodged, which was over $160,000 for that event and for the response to that event.”
Pressed to clarify, the mayor said the figure covered the permit fee, leaving open the possibility of additional costs to the city. The distinction matters because the NYPD’s estimated bill for the wedding and rehearsal dinner had been pegged at roughly $158,200, meaning the payment appears to match, but the books are not necessarily closed.
The controversy had real political fuel. Some 135 NYPD officers were deployed, and streets around the Garden were closed for the July 3 ceremony, where Adam Sandler officiated before roughly 1,000 guests. Republican Rep.
Nicole Malliotakis demanded on X that Swift and Travis Kelce reimburse the NYPD, arguing taxpayers should not be on the hook during a stretched July 4 weekend. Her post has since been hit with a reader’s context note confirming the couple paid.
For Mamdani, the episode carried its own test. A democratic socialist mayor who campaigned on affordability could ill afford the perception of a billionaire’s wedding drawing free city resources, particularly in a summer already strained by the Knicks’ championship run, the World Cup, and America 250 celebrations, events he called historical and generational.

For Swift, quietly settling the bill before the question was even asked reinforces a reputation for tipping generously and leaving no loose ends. The rumor died in a day.
The precedent for mega-events in New York may outlast it. iShareNews will follow any further cost disclosures.
