Martin Keown has turned the spotlight back on the officials after Arsenal’s 1-1 draw with Atletico Madrid, arguing that Eberechi Eze was denied a “stonewall” penalty in a moment that could shape the Champions League tie.
The former defender said referee Danny Makkelie “buckled under pressure,” a verdict that has intensified scrutiny on VAR and the standard used to overturn the late spot-kick.
The flashpoint came in the 78th minute, when Makkelie initially pointed to the spot after David Hancko challenged Eze inside the area, only to reverse the decision after a pitch-side review.
UEFA later said Atleti player No. 17 did not commit a foul, but the explanation has done little to calm Arsenal’s camp or the wider debate around consistency in elite officiating.
What makes the incident more significant is its timing. With the tie still finely balanced, the overturned decision did not just irritate supporters; it potentially altered the tactical and financial stakes of the return leg, where progression to the final could carry major sporting prestige and commercial value for Arsenal.
Keown’s intervention matters because it reframes the controversy beyond a single call. His criticism suggests the issue is not only whether contact existed, but whether referees are now being pushed into second-guessing themselves in high-pressure European matches.

Mikel Arteta was equally forceful, calling the decision “completely unacceptable” and insisting there was no clear and obvious error to justify the reversal.
He questioned the VAR process, stating there was “clear contact” and that the referee watched replays “13 times,” insisting it “changes the course of the tie”.
With UEFA’s explanation now public and the debate still raging, the incident has become a wider test of trust in football’s review system rather than just another disputed penalty.
